Cancer Research's Race for Life to not take place in Wrexham this year

The event - which has been taking place at Gwersyllt's Alyn Waters Country Park - has attracted over a thousand participants every year since first coming to Wrexham in 2006.

But it will not take place for its 14th consecutive year in Wrexham - with organisers of the Cancer Research UK fundraiser this year reducing the number of events across the UK "to save money on costs".

Caitlin Holme, Cancer Research UK national event manager for North Wales, said: “We review our events regularly because we owe it to our participants to ensure we raise as much money in the most efficient way possible.

“This means that in 2020, we’re reducing the number of events across the UK to help save money on costs."

She continued: “We are very grateful to the 1,200 people who took part in the Wrexham event last year and helped to raise £47,500.

“As we regularly review all our events, it’s possible that Race for Life could return to Wrexham in the future. But for now, we hope participants will continue the good work in 2020, by signing up for another Race for Life event this year.”

Organisers hope everyone who has taken part at Alyn Waters will join the Race for Life event this year at The Cheshire County Sports Club in Chester on Sunday, July 19.

One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress.

Organisers also express their heart-felt thanks to everyone who has taken part in the Wrexham Race for Life in recent years.
