A WOMAN has been rushed to hospital by air ambulance following a four-vehicle collision on the England-Wales border. 

The woman, said to be in her fifties, was rushed to Aintree Hospital's Major Trauma Unit following the incident that occurred at about midday on the A494 westbound on Wednesday. 

The incident took place eastbound close to the A540/A494 junction - heading towards Wales from the M56 - near Shotwick.

A full closure of the eastbound carriageway was in place until 4pm.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "At 12.24pm officers were called to reports of a multi vehicle collision at the junction of the A5117 and the A540, near to the Parkgate Road service station.

"On arrival at the scene officers found that the collision involved four vehicles, a silver Citroen Picasso, a silver Lexus, a grey Mercedes and a Iveco Silver panel van.

"A woman was treated at the scene by paramedics before being airlifted to hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

"Anyone with any information is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML-607285.”

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were in attendance - as well the Wales air ambulance.

Cheshire Fire Service was also in attendance, and confirmed crews cut a woman from a vehicle.
