TWO Flintshire men's moments of "stupidity" when drunk in Chester city centre saw them being fined.

Michael James Brassington, 28, of Maxwell Avenue, Mancot and Darren Charles Hughes, 44, of Bryn-y-Felin, Holywell, appeared separately at Chester Magistrates Court on Monday, December 23, both pleading guilty to being drunk and disorderly on the night of December 6.

Prosecuting, Hannah Scott said Brassington was stopped at the Cross at 9.10pm for a search, but he took issue with this and began swearing at them.

He ran off but returned to the scene 10 minutes later, and was seen by officers to be unsteady on his feet and slurring his words.

He continued to swear despite police warnings and was arrested.

He had five previous convictions for six dissimilar offences, the last of them coming in 2010.

Ms Scott told the court in Hughes's case, police were called to The Victoria pub by the Cross at 11.20pm by a member of staff who had waved them over.

Hughes was heard saying: "I can f***ing smoke here but not there, what is going on with this country?"

Police warned him not to swear, but Hughes said: "I want to be arrested, I will pay the £80," before adding: "f*** the Queen."

Hughes had a record for seven previous offences, the last coming in February 2011.

Both defendants represented themselves in court, saying they had been on a Christmas works do.

Brassington said: "I am sorry for what I have done," while Hughes said he could not remember what he had done, adding: "I would like to apologise for my behaviour, it's unacceptable."

Chair of magistrates Maurice McBride told both defendants they had had moments of "stupidity".

Brassington was fined £60, and Hughes was fined £80. Each must also pay £85 court costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
