A DEESIDE family is 'overwhelmed' by a kind gesture from a local charity ahead of the festive season.

Leon Procter, 10, was first diagnosed with hydrocephalus when he was aged six - a condition which fluid occurs on the brain.

After undergoing brain surgery at a young age, Leon suffered a relapse and the family hoped he was 'on the mend'.

However, following a routing scan, it was found he had a brain tumour at the base of his brain.

Mum Natasha Finch told the Leader: "It's been overwhelming.

"It has been a real rollercoaster for us. He had two life-threatening operations and we thought he was all ok but then we were told he had a brain tumour.

"It can't be removed because of where it is so it's a waiting game now to see if it is benign.

"The risk of treatment outweighed the benefits.

The Leader:

Deeside Round Table visiting the family in Connah's Quay

"For what he has been through, he is amazing. Most children make excuses not to go to school but he's the opposite.

"He wants to be involved. He pushes himself and is always smiling."

Deeside Round Table recently visited the Connah's Quay family and presented them with an all expenses paid trip to Lapland next month.

Natasha added: "We can't wait, he is over the moon.

"I would like to thank the charity, what they do for children is unbelievable. We have been given the opportunity to enjoy something as a family, something positive to look forward to rather than just hospital appointments."

Deeside Round Table is a charitable organisation raising funds for local people and causes.

A spokesman for the group said: "It's unbelievable that he has had to battle so much and yet, somehow, always seems to stay tremendously positive.

"So, thanks to our Round Table Children's Wish foundation, we've just had the huge honour of knocking on this brave little man's door and presenting him and his family with an all expenses paid four day break for all of them to Lapland to see Father Christmas next month.

"To say they're excited is a huge understatement. Have an amazing time guys. You deserve it."
