A BUCKLEY woman challenged herself in support of her 'brave' sister who is currently fighting a rare disease.

Kathryn Hughes, 35, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and thought she had beat it, until earlier this year she went to the doctors with neck pain, and discovered two tumours - one on each lung.

Sister Bethan Hughes decided to have her hair cut, as a show of support for Kathryn, and raise funds for Shooting Stars.

She told the Leader: "My sister now has less than one working lung left. The doctor gave her the option of chemo but wasn't sure if it would work.

"She went ahead with it to try and prevent it from coming back.

"She's only 35, such a young age. Kat shaved her head so her hair didn't fall out and I said if she did the chemo then I would cut my hair off too.

"I've never had it cut shorter than my shoulders. I was really nervous but also excited because I knew it was all for a good cause."

Bethan raised over £200 for the charity, ahead of her hair cut at Oaktree Playgroup in Buckley.

The Leader:

As a result of passing her £200 aim, she also pledged to dye her hair bright pink.

Bethan added: "Shooting Stars help everyone through chemo from infant age to the elderly. They need money to use for the equipment.

"We just thought this would be a worthy cause to do it for.

"It's not been easy but after four months of chemo, hopefully we will find out soon if it has been successful.

"If people can support causes like shooting stars or any cancer charity then that would be amazing. It's something we need to do and work together to do it."
