TALENTED young singer Seth Johnson is Walking on Air after landing a part in a Christmas extravaganza at Chester Cathedral.

The Grosvenor Park Academy pupil will sing the iconic track Walking in the Air, made famous by the 1985 Aled Jones cover of the song in the atmospheric 1982 animated film, while accompanied by a live orchestra in a production of The Snowman.

The 10-year-old has been a chorister at the cathedral since 2016 and was chosen after auditioning in front of choirmaster Philip Rushforth.

Mother Natasha said: “We are very excited. Singing and music are a large part of his life; he plays the piano and is preparing for his Grade 3 exams.

“When he isn’t singing, he takes part in ballet and tap classes and loves spending time with family, friends and his dog Hallie.

“He thoroughly enjoys English and reading in school, but his favourite time is breakfast club at school with his sister, Eleanor, at taekwondo classes.”

Rob Benson, music specialist and teaching assistant at Grosvenor Park, said: “I am not surprised that Seth was chosen for this part, his voice is exceptional.

“We start music tuition from as early an age as we can at Grosvenor Park.

“The children take part in Christmas production and a summer production every year which allows them to grow in confidence. There isn’t a single child in our school that couldn’t go onto a stage to sing, perform and dance.

“Music is proven to have massive cross curricular links and our strong music teaching helps to create happy children, which is always lovely to see.”

Richard Clark, head of school, said: “With the extra opportunities children are given they start to shine they develop their confidence and self-esteem, which helps them in all aspects of school life.”

The Chester primary is part of North West Academies Trust (NWAT).

Seth is performing on Friday, December 20 at 3pm and Saturday, December 21 at 3pm and 8pm.
