AN ICONIC pub in Ellesmere Port will go under the hammer at a property auction next week.

With a guide price of £150,000, the Station Hotel was built in the 1870s and in the early 1900s was said to have the longest bar in the country. The pub was a favourite drinking venue of hundreds of workers from the local iron works.

The Station Hotel will be auctioned with an adjoining car park, which produces an annual income of £7,000 and stands on a 0.4 acre site next to the town’s railway station.

It is one of 70 lots up for grabs at Pugh’s North West auction in Manchester on Tuesday, October 15.

Pugh managing director Paul Thompson said: “The Station Hotel is part of Ellesmere Port’s history and is a striking Victorian property in its own right. There is tremendous potential for the building’s redevelopment, subject to the necessary planning consents, and we are already seeing enquiries from prospective buyers.”

He added: “We find pub and hotel properties tend to generate large amounts of interest from potential buyers and sale by auction is one of the most rapid and effective ways to ensure that a former pub can take on a new and useful identity within a community.”

Established 26 years ago, Pugh is the largest auctioneer outside of London and was acquired by property consultant Eddisons in 2016. The firm’s next property auctions, featuring more than 100 properties and plots of land, will take place at the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester on 15 October, and at Leeds United’s Elland Road football ground on 17 October.
