YOUNG stars from the Chester area were recognised at this year's West Cheshire Youth and Community Awards.

Cheshire West and Chester Council Early Help and Prevention Service celebrated the work of young people and those who support them at the event.

The event, held at Northwich Memorial Court, recognised young people in West Cheshire and those dedicated individuals and groups who support 13- to 19-year-olds to help them to thrive, grow and flourish.

Cllr Nicole Meardon, Cabinet Member Children and Families, said: “It was a fantastic evening. We were overwhelmed by the number and quality of nominations we received.

“It is evident there is some fantastic work taking place across our borough and I am delighted we were able to take the opportunity to recognise the people involved.

“I would like to offer my personal congratulations to everyone who received an award and to thank all those who took the time to submit a nomination. Without your contributions we would not have heard of all the brilliant work being undertaken.”

There were nine award categories. Chester and Rural area winners included:

  • Kate Mooney, Adult Volunteer of the Year

"Fun, kind and trustworthy, young people can speak about problems or issues with ease. Kate provides hundreds of hours of volunteering to support young carers."

  • Isabel Roberts, Young Person Volunteer of the Year

"A crucial member of the Family Integrated Care Team at the Countess of Chester Hospital, ensuring families are at the heart of their baby’s care. Inspirational! Staff feel they are very lucky to have Izzy."

  • Eve Dixon and Lucy McHugh, Young Person Equality and Diversity Champion

"Without their commitment, time and care many students may feel scared, their mental health may be affected and school could be a battle. Their dedication and care for a diversity inclusive environment is commendable, they are real flag flyers for everyone."

  • Sophie Hill, Inspirational Youth Worker

"Regularly goes beyond their role supporting many young people on a one-to-one basis to help them overcome whatever difficulties they face so they can enjoy themselves and achieve their Duke of Edinburgh Award."

  • Cheshire West and Chester Council Youth Service, Early Intervention

"Teenage Relationship Abuse workshops have reached approximately 3,500 students so far and the feedback is remarkable. The work is innovative, thought provoking and the ‘right thing to do’ for our young people."
