A SIX-YEAR-OLD superstar from Ellesmere Port who has helped raise more than £6,000 has won an award.

Poppy-Mae Jones has been taking part in a number of fundraisers, including walking up Moel Famau, walking from Ellesmere Port to Chester Zoo, a bag-packing fundraiser at Morrisons and organising a Christmas toy appeal.

All these feats have been all the more remarkable given that Poppy-Mae, a pupil of Cambridge Road Primary School, has been suffering daily pain with her bowels since she was a baby.

In recognition of the ongoing support she has received while being treated at Alder Hey Children's Hospital, Poppy-Mae decided to raise thousands of pounds as well as donating toys to the hospital.

The Alder Hey Children's Hospital and Charity ambassador's superb efforts meant she has been recognised with a Young Person Outstanding Achievement accolade at the West Cheshire Youth and Community Awards on September 13.

Poppy-Mae, of Mornington Avenue, has also had surgery last month in an attempt to resolve her bowel pain, in an operation where a tube was placed into her bowels, which is later to become a Mic-Key button.

This, in theory, should resolve her gastroenterological issues, but mum Sharon Jones explained that sadly Poppy-Mae was still suffering pain following the surgery.

She said: "She's not having a good time now; she is getting the usual pain with the new pain after having surgery.

"Only time will tell. We are waiting to see what the effect of the surgery is, and the tube will be changed into a Mic-Key button.

"If it doesn't help then the surgeons said we would be looking at a colostomy bag which, when it was put to her, there were a few tears, and a few from me as well. We are hoping we don't go down that road.

"Other than that, she is still Poppy."

While Poppy-Mae was able to collect her outstanding achievement honour, she is in too much pain this week to attend the second awards ceremony this month for where she is in contention.

Sharon said a representative for the family would attend Friday's North West Charity Awards, where Poppy-Mae is a finalist for Young Charity Ambassador of the Year.

Despite the setback, Poppy-Mae continues to be "extremely busy" and another Alder Hey fundraiser is to take place at the Whitby Sports and Social Club on Sunday, October 20, from noon until 4pm.

There will be a bouncy castle and slide, DJ entertainment provided by Wirral Entertainment, face painting, crafts, cake and sweet stall as well mascots and appearances from fire, police and ambulance teams.

As well as this, there will be a bag-packing event at Morrisons the following Sunday, October 27.

After that, Poppy-Mae told her mum she wants to walk up "a hill with snow" for her next fundraising feat.

Sharon said: "We did Moel Famau earlier this year and I think Poppy thought there would be snow at the top, but we went on about the hottest day of the year. It might be Mount Snowdon next year, but I'd like her to pick something easy for my sake!

"She just tells me what to do and we do it."
