FREE weekly sessions for children interested in learning and playing American football began at a Flinthire school on Sunday (September 15).

Fourteen boys and girls turned up bright and early to Queensferry Primary School for their free one-hour session, with even more expected to attend next week.

The Flintshire Romans Flag Club has been organised and developed by the Chester Romans team who compete in the British American Football Association National Leagues (BAFANL).

Speaking to the Leader after the first session, Geraint Griffiths, organiser and general manager of the Chester Romans, said: “The children had a great time.

“Everyone who attended enjoyed their first session, and there are definitely some youngsters to keep an eye on in the future with their natural talent shining through.

“For me personally, it was great to see my dream of bringing American football to children come true.

“Hopefully initiatives like this will help the sport to keep growing in the future, and that’s why we’ve arranged a visit from the Team GB quarterback coach to speak to the children in the next couple of weeks.”

Sessions will take place every Sunday morning between 9am and 10am at Queensferry Primary School.

Any parents or carers who would like further information can contact the club or academy by e-mail at ChesterRomans@Gmail.com or ChesterRomansAcademy@Gmail.com.

Local businesses who would like to help with sponsorship of the scheme are also being invited to get in touch.

The Flintshire Romans Flag Club was set up following Ysgol Gwynedd's heroics in reaching the final of the 2019 national NFL Flag Championships which they qualified for after beating other Flintshire schools in a regional qualifier.
