AN LGBT pride summer fayre took place at an Ellesmere Port care home – raising funds for a sensory room for residents.

A raffle, stalls, barbecue, a visit from Mickey and Minnie Mouse and entertainment were all available at Aaron Court Care Home, on Princes Road.

Stuart Tinsley, senior care assistant at the home, also dressed in drag for the day, adopting the stage name Vera Poundcake.

One of the event’s stall holders was The Silver Rainbows, an older people’s LGBT network, who were there to raise awareness and promote their services.

Nic Bunting, a senior care assistant and LGBT champion at the care home, gave a speech on the meaning of pride events.

She said: “Aaron Court is a very diverse home for our residents. Knowing that somebody in our care could feel isolated, different or unworthy is heart-breaking.

“That's why today is to show everyone that love is love and we are all worthy of that. No matter of our sexuality, race or gender.

“We have pride to celebrate times changing, making it acceptable to marry the one you love. Today is about acceptance without exception.”

The fayre raised £250 – with 10 per cent going to Chester Pride, which had to postpone their annual parade until September 22 due to adverse weather and has been calling for donations to help recover some of the lost costs.

The remaining funds will go towards a sensory room for residents at Aaron Court Care Home, to provide therapeutic benefits for those living with dementia.

Home manager Lindsey Quegan said: “The summer fayre was a fun and enjoyable day for residents, family, staff and the local community.

“We are delighted with the amount raised and pleased to donate some of the proceeds to Chester Pride, after having to reschedule their annual parade.

“I would like to say thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a special day.”
