A MAN from a village between Chester and Wrexham has re-issued his book to commemorate the upcoming anniversary of the start of the Second World War.

David Hayns, 77, has lived in Malpas, Cheshire, for over half a century after originally being born and raised in London.

After speaking to a number of local people who lived or worked in Malpas during the war years, the author first published his book on what life was like in that time back in 2005.

Now, in 2019, with the eightieth anniversary of the beginning of World War II coming up on September 3, Mr Hayns has re-issued his book to prevent those real recollections that he gathered from being forgotten forever.

Mr Hayns said: “There was a lot of interest in the book when I first published it in 2005, and now there’s a renewed interest in the war with the anniversary coming up.

“I interviewed around 20 people who were old enough to remember the war for the book, but many of them have now passed away and taken their memories with them.

“So, by re-issuing ‘Malpas and the Home Front 1939-1945: Wartime life in a small Cheshire town’, I’m hoping to keep their recollections alive.”

The 58-page book embraces a number of themes, including social life during the war, the Liverpool and London evacuees, wartime farming.

As well as also touching on the contributions made by the Women’s Land Army and the effects enemy aircraft had on the local area, the book also features 40 black and white photographs taken from that era.

An epilogue also gives the backgrounds of the nineteen men who died, whose names are recorded on the Malpas War Memorial.

The book is currently on sale for £5.00 at the Malpas Post Office and Bookshop in Green End, Whitchurch.
