PETROL station staff gave a new lease of life to the facilities used by a Buckley sports club.

Staff from the Spar Retail Group got their hands dirty as they helped to paint the changing rooms joined onto the Argoed Sports and Social Club – which hasn’t been updated for almost 30 years.

Eighteen volunteers arrived at 8.30am on Tuesday morning and helped to paint the corridors, toilet facilities, changing rooms and ceilings of the building.

The Spar team provided the paint, brushes, and rollers in order to carry out the work which had been organised through Billy Kemp, the chairman of Mynydd Isa Youth Football (MIYFC).

He said: “All members of the ASA, which comprises MIYFC, Mynydd Isa Spartans FC, Maeshafn and Mynydd Isa Cricket Club and Argoed Bowling Club, would all like to extend their very grateful thanks for this amazing contribution to the facilities for the local community.”

Billy added that there is only so much that the club can do as they are all volunteers completing this work in their spare time so to have an extra set of hands on the job – or 18 extra sets! – can get so much done.

As part of the renewal of the club’s amenities, the toilet amenities were completely revamped which included brand new fixtures for the disabled bathroom.

Sue Mace, from the Spar team in Buckley, said: “It is great to be getting involved in community projects like this and giving a helping hand or two. We have done similar jobs like this within the Buckley area and hope to get out there and do more in the future.”
