AN Ellesmere Port primary school is celebrating after striking gold for sporting success.

Woodlands Primary School in Eddisbury Road has achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2018/19 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Woodland Primary's sporting achievements this year include winning local football, netball and athletic inter-school events as well as finishing first in the Year 5 Everton mini kickers, second in the Y5/6 netball regional finals and third in the Y5/6 regional football finals.

As well as this, pupils competed in regional finals in indoor athletics, gymnastics and quad athletics, while being highly competitive in street dance, dodgeball, orienteering and tri-golf, which children competed in for the first time this year.

A school spokesperson said: "With a total of 389 children competing in local inter-school competitions this year, we are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our competitions possible.

"As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year."
