AN investigation has been launched after a porpoise was found dead next to a blood-stained rock in Port Sunlight River Park.

The porpoise was found by wardens at the park next to a bloodied rock, metal pole and gloves on Friday, June 28.

National animal welfare charity RSPCA confirmed that the body was found 10 metres above sea level at high tide and therefore impossible for the porpoise to have reached there unless it had been carried.

Chester and District Standard:

The carcase may have been there for several days

RSPCA Inspector Anthony Joynes said: “The area where the body was discovered is high up on rocks and even at high tide the body is positioned 10 metres above sea level so it is impossible that it got there on its own - it must have been carried.

“At this stage it is not clear how the porpoise died however a bloodied metal pole, rock and gloves were found nearby which suggests the mammal may have been killed unlawfully.

“Also if someone had simply found an injured porpoise I find it odd that they’ve not reported the incident or requested help.

“I am not ruling anything out at this stage but am urging anyone who saw anything suspicious in recent days in this area to contact the RSPCA.

“The body was found on Friday (28th) but could have been there for a few days before it was discovered.

“The park wardens have said they have a problem with trespassers going onto the rocks to fish at high tide and I would also like to appeal to those people to also get in touch if they can help shed any light on this incident.”

Under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017, porpoises are protected.

It is illegal to deliberately capture, injure, kill or disturb any porpoise - if someone is found guilty of doing so, the maximum penalty is six months in prison and/or a fine.
