A VILLAGE near Ellesmere Port has been invaded by scarecrows!

It may sound like the set-up for a new horror film but this is actually Little Sutton’s first ever Scarecrow Festival – and it’s proving a huge hit.

More than 200 residents, families, schools and nurseries have got involved, making a host of creations from the Incredible Hulk to SpongeBob.

Chester and District Standard:

We are now midway through the week-long festival, which runs from June 23 to 30.

Organisers at the PALS group (Positive Action for Little Sutton) told the Standard they were delighted by the community’s response.

Ellesmere Port Round Table donated bales of straw which were initially distributed to the six primary schools and two churches to enable them all to get involved.

More were later sent out to the Sutton Sapphires WI, Little Sutton Library and Jessop Court.

Graffiti artist ‘Devious’, who painted the poppies and snowmen last year as well as the ‘It’s ok not to be ok’ paintings in the town over the last year, has also been using her talents to good use.

Little Sutton Methodist Church are offering a free coffee morning for scarecrow builders and spotters on Saturday (June 29) from 10am until noon, assisted by the Little Sutton Sapphires WI in serving drinks in the church hall.

Chester and District Standard:

Sunday, June 30, is the final day of the festival and also the day of the popular village summer festival with an art exhibition, dog show, funfair, bouncy castle, face painting, glitter artists, children’s activities over 45 stalls, licensed bar, barbecue and more all taking place at Little Sutton Community Centre from 11am to 5pm.

St Mary of the Angels Primary School, on Rossall Grove, is hosting a trail of 25 scarecrows on Thursday (June 27) when all will be welcome. It will take place from 8.15am to 10.15 am and kitchen staff will be selling bacon butties and toast.

PALS added: “It’s not too late to build a scarecrow and add it to the map if you want to get involved if you live in or around Little Sutton.

Chester and District Standard:

“If you can’t make a scarecrow you could always paint a pebble and put it somewhere in the village to help add to the festivities as some are doing.”

They added: “The Scarecrow Festival will form part of Little Sutton’s contribution to this year’s Ellesmere Port in Bloom bid, of which community engagement is a contributing factor.”
