A NUMBER of events to mark Refugee Week are being held in Chester, co-ordinated by the Chester City of Sanctuary Group.

Running throughout this week, until June 22, is a free exhibition at Chester Cathedral's cloister room.

It features an I-Welcome photo exhibition, highlighting refugees past and present, with photographs by Magnum Photos showing the situation for refugees in Calais.

There is also a myths and facts display and a quiz, a film screening of Walk My Journey made by Chester's Theatre in the Quarter, six young refugees and 700 local schoolchildren.

There is also an art display by children from St Martin's Academy in Chester.

On Thursday, June 20, at the Grosvenor Museum's lecture theatre at 7pm, there will be a free talk by Jonathan Ellis, vice chair of the national City of Sanctuary Group and an opportunity to meet the representatives of the Chester group, as well as a chance to hear personal refugee stories.

On Saturday, June 22, at the Unity Centre in Cuppin Street, from noon to 4pm, there will be a celebration of food made by local resettled families, in association with Cheshire Halton and Warrington Race and Equality Centre. Admission is free.

Back at Chester Cathedral on Sunday, June 23, there will be morning services at 10am and 11.30am with speaker Nadine Daniel, national refugee welcome co-ordinator for the Church of England.

Finally, also on Sunday, at Storyhouse at 3.15pm, there will be a screening of 'Britain on Film: Welcome to Britain'. This is a collection of archive films looking back at a century of immigration to the UK. Tickets for this cost £6 and can be booked at Storyhouse or at www.storyhouse.com.
