A NEWLY opened gym put on free fitness sessions for local children over the recent half term.

Nicholson Kickboxing and Fitness in Bagillt, run by former kickboxing World Super Heavyweight Champion Ricky Nicholson, opened its doors for free half hour sessions for children over the summer half term.

The Leader:

Ricky, 45, grew up in nearby Flint, and now wants to give something back to the community.

Ricky explained: "I'm a firm believer that where and when you can give something back to the community you grew up in, you should.

"In the electronic age of game consoles and television, I just want to help as many children, including those who are disadvantaged or disabled, to stay healthy."

Ricky started his kickboxing career in Flint, before going on to lift the World Super Heavyweight Champion in September 1999 beating Lithuanian Rolandus Digris.

Ricky added: "It's just nice to come full circle, having started out in Flint and now returning to open a gym here."

The Leader:

The children were put through their paces with basic fitness drills, and were given water and fruit courtesy of Tesco in Flint.

The Leader:

And Ricky hopes to put on more sessions during the summer holidays.

He said: "We only advertised the half-term sessions a couple of days before they started, and we still got 16 children down.

"So over the summer holidays, I'm looking to put on more sessions and hopefully we can see that number doubled."

Nicholson's Kickboxing and Fitness is open 7 days a week and can be found at Unit 10, Manor Industrial Estate, Flint, CH6 5UY
