A LOCAL schoolgirl is enjoying family bike rides thanks to Chester-based children’s charity Children Today.

Seven-year old Olivia, who attends Dorin Park School in Chester, suffered brain damage in the womb, and as a result, has global development delay, resulting in problems with mobility and communication.

Olivia’s mum Nicole Luijnenburg explained: "It was clear from early on that she wasn’t hitting the usual milestones and she also needed correctional operations as she had dysplasia of the hips.’’

Until receiving a grant for a specialist adapted trike from Children Today, Olivia was unable to join her parents, who are keen cyclists, on family rides.

Nicole added: "We’re a very outdoorsy family – being Dutch, cycling is in my blood! However, Olivia’s physical disabilities made it difficult to get out and about as a family.

"The trike has been a great boost to her both physically and mentally. It helps improve her posture as it offers great physical support and has also given her a confidence boost.’’

Children Today, which is celebrating its 25-year anniversary, provides funding for specialist equipment for children and young people with disabilities across the UK.

Through its support Olivia, described by her mum as "a vivacious little girl", will be able to get involved in activities she can share with her friends.

Her mother is already planning the next outing for them as a family to look forward to in the months ahead.

Nicole said: "The trike can also be attached to our bikes, so we can go on longer journeys together. We haven’t tried it yet, but plan to this summer.’’
