ELTON man Steve Spencer is this Saturday (May 25) set to embark on the 130-mile Anglesey Coastal Path trek in aid of Dementia UK.

The seven-day trek is in memory of Steve’s dad. An avid Chester FC fan, Steve’s late father Peter sadly died in October 2017, having been diagnosed with supranuclear palsy earlier that year.

Recounting ‘fond memories’ of the North Wales island, having many happy holidays there, Steve will walk the ‘gruelling’ Anglesey coastal route with his ‘trusty’ partner Sarah Adshead, with others joining him along the way. He is aiming to walk 20 miles per day, with the help of some Scouts for the final part of the walk.

It is not the first hike of its kind for community leader Steve, who has been involved with the Scouts for 15 years. He is responsible for the junior route of the annual Cheshire Hike, where hundreds of young scouts take to the countryside for a 31km weekend camp-and-hike event.

The eldest of three siblings, Steve’s family are popular in the village, with siblings Phil and Hayley a junior football coach and Beaver leader respectively. The family are calling on both local businesses and residents to help them pay respects to the ‘best dad and grandad anyone could have’.

Steve’s JustGiving page spoke about the importance of the walk. It read: “Dementia isn't just being a little bit forgetful or a natural part of getting older. There is nothing funny about dementia - it is a horrible disease that is stealing people from their loved ones on a daily basis.

“Even if people can't donate I hope to raise more awareness about dementia so that the next time you are in the street and see someone looking confused, or are at the till in the shop and the person in front is slow, or someone says something strange to you that doesn't quite make sense - please think twice about being mean or making cruel comments - show a bit of understanding - ask if you can help.”
