PUPILS at Little Sutton C of E Primary School are celebrating their success at the Ellesmere Port and Neston Cross Country Finals.

The Little Sutton school picked up three awards with year 3/4 boys taking the trophy for first place, year 5/6 boys receiving a runners up certificate and the girls team narrowly missing out on the placings.

Little Sutton C of E Primary School also took the trophy for best overall performing school, based on the accumulated points from each individual child.

The school attributes its success to the school’s own running club, which was set up by teaching assistant Alison Thomas and Mal Socker-Jones, the school’s part time PE coach.

The running club was founded in September 2015 and runs after school on Tuesdays with an aim of encouraging children to work towards their personal best and have fun.

If they wish, the children can also participate in the Ellesmere Port and Neston Saturday morning races, and over a third of Little Sutton Primary School’s pupils have taken part in at least one Saturday morning race.

With extensive outdoor space available at Little Sutton Primary School, teaching assistant Alison Thomas put forward the school as a host for one of the Saturday morning races.

The races are designed for KS2 children of all running ability, whether they want to run for enjoyment or for competition. As all finishers contribute points towards the team totals, every person’s efforts count.

Year 3/4 boys from Little Sutton Primary School with their winners’ trophy and school trophy

The 2019 series of Saturday morning races is complete but the running club continues to meet each Tuesday.

Alison Thomas, from Little Sutton Primary School, said: “We are immensely proud of the children’s achievements and success.

"The club has gone from strength to strength. Little Sutton Primary have been either winners or runners up every year since we started competing in 2015, and this year we topped that with the best overall performing school trophy too. Some of our runners have also had individual success, with certificates for finishing in the top 5 of their race.

"Watching the children’s enthusiasm and confidence grow, with everyone trying their best and supporting each other, is such a pleasure.

"I can’t wait to see what our running club can achieve in the future.”
