POLICE have confirmed that the body found in the canal in Chester this morning is that of a man.

Police divers were at the Shropshire Union Canal near Garden Lane in Chester this morning (Friday, April 26) after a body seen in the waterway.

Residents in Tower Road described seeing up to five police cars near the canal basin.

Divers searched the waterway to recover the body and a cordon was been set up.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At around 6.15am on Friday 26 April police were called to reports of a body being found in the Shropshire Union Canal near to Garden Lane in Chester.

"A specialist underwater search team attended the scene to recover the body of a man and a small police cordon was set up.

"Officers investigated the circumstances surrounding the death and have concluded it is not believed to be suspicious.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Police divers were also deployed to the canal in Christleton yesterday (Thursday, April 25) after a reported sighting of a bone.
