A YOUNG star from Ellesmere Port has reached new heights in her fundraising for Alder Hey Children's Charity.

Poppy Mae Jones, six, successfully climbed Moel Famau, the highest hill in the Clwydian Range, in gloriously sunny weather on Easter Sunday.

The Cambridge Road Primary School pupil, a Matalan and Alder Hey Hospital ambassador, has a chronic bowel condition and has been treated and cared for at the hospital.

Mum Sharon Jones said Poppy had been experiencing "an awful lot of pain" recently which required a couple of hospital trips, making her latest fundraising achievement that more remarkable.

Sharon said: "It was a lovely day; we did struggle a little bit but we had a good time and took a couple of dogs with us as well, while Poppy wore a little bunny outfit.

"For someone who has pain every day, it was more of a challenge for her, but she made a statement that you can achieve anything.

"She has done really well with all the fundraising. From the walk we collected £1,633.35 and we're on about £5,000 raised since July last year."

Preparation for the fundraising walk took the form of a bag-packing event at Morrisons supermarket in Ellesmere Port, which collected hundreds of pounds.

A date has now been provisionally set for Poppy's potentially life-changing surgery on July 16.

If all goes well with the surgery, Poppy will subsequently be fitted with a special tube for 12 weeks which will wash out her bowels each day as she recovers.

Sharon added: "Hopefully she won't need any further operations, we will have to wait and see what the outcome of the operation is.

"She was very determined at the walk and said she now wants to go up a mountain with snow on it!

"We will probably have a couple of months' break then we will see what she wants to do, how she reacts after the operation."

But for now, there was a special reward for Poppy thanks to Trish Barker and Kay Lee Evans, two employees at the Build-a-Bear Workshop in Cheshire Oaks, who ensured a special discount on a teddy treat as a 'well done'.

Those who joined Poppy on her fundraising walk were mum Sharon Jones, dad Simon Jones, Ian and Maxine Atherton, Louise Stanford, Lisa Cooper, Neil Bebb and Lilly Bebb.

Sharon added: "Thank you to Morrisons Ellesmere Port and HR Go Recruitment in Little Sutton for their ongoing support."
