STAFF at a historic attraction in Chester have started a search for a stone mason who left a note hidden in the site's toilet block more than 50 years ago.

Most notes scrawled in toilets are best ignored - but this note written in 1964 has sparked a search on social media using the hashtag #TheSearchforMartinGoulding.

The note was found secreted in one of the walls in the toilet block, that staff admit was in desperate need of refurbishment.

The writer of the note left his name, Martin Goulding, and added that he worked as a stonemason and was aged 25 when he left the note on August 21, 1964.

Castle staff posted on Facebook: "Here it is. Our latest discovery. Our recent visitors will have noticed we are refurbishing our very worn and deteriorated toilet block. We have found a tiny note, hidden deep in the walls by stonemason Martin Goulding 55 years ago."

Now staff want to invite Martin back to the castle as a thank you from all the staff and visitors who have spent a penny at the castle thanks to his handiwork.

Staff added "We would love to find him and invite him back to Beeston. Help us find him folks!"
