COULD you captain a ferry boat and help transport Chester passengers along the River Dee this summer?

ChesterBoat is looking for a new ferry captain to serve aboard The Sandy Lane Ferry.

Part of the community initiative supported by Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Ferry service runs every weekend throughout the summer.

The Sandy Lane Ferry has been in operation for over 50 years and is run as part of a community initiative with Cheshire West and Chester Council.

It is a mile to the east of the city linking the city at Sandy Lane with The Meadows on the edge of the Duke of Westminster’s Estate and is a family friendly, dog-friendly crossing in a big blue boat.

The service is unique to Chester and takes passengers from the city to the path on The Meadows, opposite the landing stage, making the area, known as Chester's 'green lung', more accessible for walkers and picnickers.

The Sandy Lane Ferry now needs a new captain to take the helm and ferry passengers across the River Dee.

An ideal position for someone with time on their hands, someone who may be retired and from the community, and who knows a bit about the history of the river, the city and The Meadows.

Brian Clarke, managing director at ChesterBoat, said: "This is an important and fun opportunity for a member of the public to run the ferry and be a part of the community.

"The role is to ensure we can maintain the service across the river for the residents and visitors alike and is part of the city’s community initiative.

"No experience is necessary as training will be given in ferry management, safeguarding, life-saving techniques and navigation."

The Sandy Lane ferry is run in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council and ChesterBoat Company Ltd, which operates the service at weekends, including bank holidays, from 10.30am-4.30pm Saturdays and 11am-4.30pm Sundays, until the end of September.
