FERRY enthusiasts are being given the chance to celebrate 125 years since the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal by cruising along the famous waterway.

After welcoming more than 13,000 people on board the Mersey Ferries cruises last year, the unique day out is expected to see a huge boost in sales during this special anniversary year.

The Manchester Ship Canal Cruise offers passengers the chance to sail along the Mersey Estuary through locks and under bridges.

Passengers will be able to admire the canal's construction as they cruise through the waterway's breathtaking views.

Running for six hours, the cruises will start in May and run through October 2019, with the 35-mile journey leaving passengers with a sense of how the canal’s construction helped shape the North West.

Gary Evans of Mersey Ferries said: “The Manchester Ship Canal is one of the most iconic engineering feats in the UK and we’re incredibly proud to be celebrating its 125th anniversary with another packed programme of cruises.

"The cruises have a great reputation for providing a memorable and interesting day out and attract visitors from all over the world.

“Every year the popular cruises sell quickly, so this year we’re expecting high demand during the canal’s anniversary year.”

Ideal for those with an interest in industrial heritage, nature or bird watching, the cruises will depart from Salford and Liverpool on selected dates.

The trips will offer passengers the chance to learn more about the fascinating history and listen to live commentary from blue badge guides.

The on-board cafe and bar will offer refreshments and snacks throughout the cruise.

Tickets are £44 per person and include return journey by coach.
