ALMOST £4,000 is to be spent on a flashing sign to increase safety at a speeding hotspot in Wrexham town centre.

Plans are moving forward to install safety measures on Hightown Road, in Smithfield, where before Christmas 109 cars were clocked speeding in a single day.

At a previous meeting of Caia Park Community Council in December, it was heard that speed monitoring surveys carried out on the road found that many drivers were found to be in the 31-45 miles per hour range, and that on one day, 109 cars were found to be going faster than 30mph.

It is hoped a flashing sign can be installed on the 30 miles per hour road which links the Eagles Meadow roundabout to Hightown and Caia Park.

Caia Park Community Council and Wrexham Council are working together on the project, with the community council receiving an update from Smithfield Councillor Adrienne Jeorrett at their meeting this month.

Cllr Jeorrett said: "The flashing sign would go on a lamppost that is currently made of cast-iron, and would need to be replaced with an LED lamppost.

"To replace the column would cost another £1,900 on top of the £2,000 for the sign."

Sgt Claire McGrady of North Wales Police, who was at the December meeting, confirmed that there would soon be a police operation looking at speeding and that “Hightown Road will form a part of that”.

Having agreed to support the work at a previous meeting, the community council agreed to fund the replacement lamppost and the new flashing sign.
