MOTORISTS heading on the M56 in the direction of Manchester Airport are being warned to expect delays due to a jackknifed lorry.
The incident was reported on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 9 (Tabley M6 turn-off) and junction 7 (A556 Bowdon) shortly after 12.30pm.
Highways England report the HGV is wedged into the central barrier and a recovery operation is required, including the need to clean up spillage.
North West Motorway Police said on Twitter: ""The jackknifed lorry driver had to take evasive action to avoid colliding with another vehicle."
The motorway is down to one lane open eastbound as a result, while lane three is shut on the westbound side of the carriageway.
"Be aware if heading to Manchester Airport," added Highways England on Twitter.
Update: Highways England have said lane closures on the eastbound cariageway have been removed, but there is still a lane closure westbound. Delays are still expected.
