THE Met Office has issued a warning for snow and ice for tomorrow and Wednesday.

Much of the country is expected to see some snowfall, with tabloids predicting "Snowmageddon".

The Met Office issued the yellow severe warning to take place from 12pm on Tuesday, January 29 and 11am on Wednesday, January 30 for the whole of the UK.

The area likely to be affected covers the North West of England, including Chester, Ellesmere Port, Frodsham and Helsby.

A band of rain is set to arrive across Wales, Cheshire and Wirral throughout Tuesday and it will move eastwards during Tuesday evening.

On hills the rain will turn quickly into snow and then also to low levels in some places.

Residents are being warned to expect 3cm to 5cm of snow on high ground with up to 12cm in some places.

Due to clear skies at night, ice is likely to form on road surfaces so people are being warned to expect longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

Met Office forecaster Ellie Creed said there was likely to be a 'widespread' frost and possible ice forming overnight.

She said: “I think you could well find it’s somewhere between -5 and -7C over the Scottish glens - but actually for lots of places maybe negative degrees, about -2 to -3C in the north, whereas some cities in the south will be hovering around zero.

“It’s a case of normal wintry hazards that we would expect – snow, ice, frost are going to be quite prevalent over the next few days.”

Forecasters are also urging the public to be wary of ice on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Residents are warned to take care against slipping on icy surfaces and motorists are told to expect potentially hazardous driving conditions on untreated roads.

We have been warned to expect that: "Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

"Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

Probably some ice on some untreated roads."

A patchy covering of 1 to 2 cm is possible at low levels, although some places will see no snow at all. As skies clear overnight, ice is likely to form on some surfaces.
