COMMUTERS using the Merseyrail network have faced major disruption this morning (Wednesday) due to icy conditions.

Sub-zero temperatures hit the region last night and the train operator has announced that, due to icy conditions preventing electricity reaching the train, certain lines were not working.

They include the lines between Chester and Hooton and between Ellesmere Port and Hooton.

To compound the problem, Merseyrail has said through its social media channels that replacement bus services are unavailable, and is advising passengers to "make alternative travel arrangements".

The announcement was slammed by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders on Twitter as "not good enough".
