THE speed limit on almost all of Chester city centre's roads could be cut to 20mph if new council plans are approved.

Residents are invited to have their say on Cheshire West and Chester Council's proposals, which include practically every street within the city walls, the ring road and the Groves.

If approved, the new speed limits would be put in place by the end of March.

The only major roads which would be exempt from the plans are the dual carriageway section of the ring road, meaning Nicholas Street, St Martin's Way and St Oswald's Way would retain a 30mph limit.

Although motorists would find it difficult to exceed 20mph naturally on some of the roads within Chester city centre due to the streets' design, roads such as Nun's Road, Pepper Street, Grosvenor Street and Lower Bridge Street would see drivers needing to watch their speed.

New 20mph signs would be installed at the perimeter of where the limit would be imposed. However, no traffic calming measures such as speed bumps would be put in place.

Those wishing to express opinions on the plans should do so by February 8 to Kieran Collins, Highways Commissioner, Cheshire West and Chester Borough Council, Highways Office Guilden Sutton, Guilden Sutton Lane, Guilden Sutton, Chester CH3 7EX.
