The godmother of a child who was seriously injured in a collision says there has been an outpouring of support and donations.

Alfie Watts, 10, was taken to hospital in critical condition following the incident in Park Avenue, Saltney, on Sunday afternoon.

He is now in Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

A fundraising page set up on the website gofundme by his godmother Mandy O'Brien, of Saltney, on Tuesday has seen more than £5,500 pouring in from over 380 generous donors.

She told the Leader: "Alfie's parents Zoe and John are devastated. They are going to spend a lot of time at the hospital.

"It was to help them with the petrol costs or to cover some bills while they are away - I didn't expect so many donations.

"Since he has been in hospital he has not deteriorated, but he is still in an a bad way.

"He is still in an induced coma and until he comes out of that and they do an MRI scan we don't know how bad it is.

"Everyone wants the best outcome but we just don't know."

She added that in addition to the outpouring of support and donations through the page, she has also been approached by local businesses and organisations who are to hold fundraising events in aid of her appeal.

These include Wizz Kidz in Saltney, which is holding a fundraising event between 4pm and 6pm on Monday - tickets for which cost £4 on the door - and the Saltney Ferry pub in Saltney, which will hold a Grease themed bingo session on January 26.

The Catholic School in Chester, where Alfie's 14-year-old brother Charlie is a pupil, will hold a City Jazz Orchestra concert from 7.30pm on February 1.
