DETERMINED barrel rollers can once again test their mettle and blow away those post-Christmas cobwebs in Denbigh this festive season.

The 60th running of The Championship of Wales Roll the Barrel will take centre stage this Boxing Day, for a day's celebrations that will also include the traditional Flint & Denbigh Hunt and hounds and a parade of vintage tractors.

Having it it's first outing in 1958, Rotarian Alderman Hywel Owen brought the idea of a barrel rolling contest to the large crowds who came to see the Flint & Denbigh hunt every year, and thus, a tradition was born.

A street collection amongst the crowd on that day raised £50, of which £40/14/7p was donated to Denbigh Aged and Disabled - charities that still receive some of the proceeds of the annual celebration.

Returning this year is the team competition where two men, women or mixed pairs can compete as well as a separate course in Crown Square for juniors to race against the clock using a smaller barrels.

Entry is free to all heats with limited places are available.

This year's main event - The Championship of Wales Roll the Barrel - commences at about 11am, with current Rotary president Kevin Roberts acting as the starter, with the Mayor of Denbigh, cllr Catherine Jones and celebrity Sarah Louise Davies also starting a few races.

Taking on the role of MC this year is Rotarian Ifor John Jones, assisted by John Sellers, Dilwyn Pierce and Emyr Thomas as they guide the crowd through the morning’s events.

In addition to the barrel rolling madness, there will be a parade of vintage tractors in procession across the High Street at about 10.30am, while up to 100 horses and riders from the Flint & Denbigh Hunt and hounds are expected at the usual time of 10.45am.

All the morning’s events take place subject to weather conditions.

Please note that a road closure from HSBC Bank on Vale Street to Lenton Pool will be in effect on Boxing Day, with all residents and businesses within this area expected to move their vehicles by 9am.
