UP TO 80 people put their best feet forward to walk the newly completed 'Fallen for the Fallen' Poppy Trail on Remembrance Sunday.

Following the Upton-by-Chester Armistice Day remembrance events, the Friends of the Countess of Chester Country Park organised a community walk along the two-mile trail to the First World War memorial seat in the park.

The trail features carved poppies which each represent soldiers named on the Cenotaph. They were led by Cllr Alison Bennion, the Standard Bearer for the Royal British Legion Upton-By-Chester Branch and Andy Scargill from the Friends group, who co-ordinated the project.

After making their way through the streets of Upton, then across the fields and into the Country Park they were met by the Rev John Kingsley, the Chaplain of the Countess of Chester Hospital.

A short service then took place which remembered, not only the 27 soldiers on the Upton Memorial, but also those others who were affected by the Great War.

Dr Christian Dunn from the Friends group said: “It was an absolute pleasure to go on the Poppy Trail today to the Countess Park. It was an incredible achievement to put on such an act of remembrance and it was a great turnout!”

If anyone wishes to do the ‘Fallen for the Fallen’ Poppy Trail, leaflets can be picked up from Upton Library, Tourist Information and many other places. There are also interpretation boards with the map at either end of the trail.

The mural, produced by pupils from the Upton schools, which accompanies this project is now being moved from the Cathedral Cloisters into the shop window of the old Share Shop by Storyhouse. The Friends encourage as many as possible to view the mural and to share their thoughts about it.
