A DANCER from Chester, described by the BBC as an ‘Amazing Human’, will present his latest work at Storyhouse at the end of November.

Paul Bayes Kitcher, artistic director of Fallen Angels Dance Theatre, presents Acts of Recovery at the Garret Theatre on Wednesday, November 28. The performance explores real-life stories of recovery from addiction.

A highlight of the Storyhouse performance is the critically acclaimed The War Within, which premiered at Birmingham Hippodrome with Birmingham Royal Ballet and Geese Theatre in September.

David Mead, of the website seeingdance.com, described the performance as: “Not many evenings in the theatre leave such a deep impression.”

In October Paul, a former dancer with the Birmingham Royal Ballet, was the subject of the BBC3 series Amazing Humans.

The three-minute documentary, which has been shared on social media almost 200,000 times, charts Paul’s long battle with drugs and alcohol and how he now uses dance to help others in recovery.

He said: “We help people on a pathway to recovery. What I am really interested in is how movement can help heal the mind rather than the mind healing the body.”

Joanna (Jo) Kirkby, of Birkenhead, who also features in the documentary, is one of the three dancers who will perform The War Within in Chester.

Jo says she has been clean from alcohol and drugs for nearly six months since working with Paul. The performance will also feature the University of Chester Dance Department, and FADT’s Community Recovery groups from Chester and Liverpool.

Paul was able to share his vision with Her Majesty The Queen and her new daughter-in-law Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, during their visit to Chester last summer. Dancers from Fallen Angels Dance Theatre presented an example of their work at the official opening of Storyhouse in June.

Acts of Recovery, on Wednesday, November 28 at 7.45pm, has been made possible through support from The Linbury Trust, Cheshire Community Foundation and Tesco Bags of the Help.

Tickets, priced at £10, are available from the Storyhouse website.
