THE death of a man in a Chester canal last night is being treated as unexplained.

However, as rumours fly around on social media police have also said it is not thought to be suspicious.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "The body found in the canal was a man.

"His death is being treated as unexplained but it is not believed to be suspicious.

"Formal identification has not yet taken place. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Officers were called to Cow Lane Bridge, which runs over the canal near Frodsham Street, at around 6.20pm on Monday, October 15.

They cordoned the area off amid reports that a body had been spotted in the water.

A specialist underwater team recovered the body of a man and diversions were put in place.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death and further details will be provided when they become available."
