A road rage “bully” accused of pushing over a dentist who’d been cycling home from work was jailed for 14 weeks and banned from driving for nine months on Monday.

Adam Smith, aged 34, of Ffordd Pantycelyn, Prestatyn, smelled as if he had been drinking and was like a “raging bull,” a court at Llandudno heard.

Prosecutor James Neary said cyclist David Lee had shouted “hey” when a car got close to him and was “pretty sure” he didn’t swear.

But stocky Smith reversed and jumped out of the car to confront him, being abusive and pushing the victim to the ground at Prestatyn. Smith was quizzed by police some time later.

Mr Neary said the trouble happened in Ffordd Isa last July when a silver car pulled very close to the cyclist. Smith had been in an “absolute rage” but then appeared to start calming down. However, the victim had been pushed over with the bike falling on top of him.

A witness called the police and a photograph was taken of the car.

Mr Neary said Smith claimed his victim had sworn and he didn’t want his daughter to hear this. But the prosecutor said Smith had been swearing in front of her in a case of road rage. “This was an unprovoked assault on the victim,” he added.

Smith admitted common assault. District judge Gwyn Jones told him: ”You used your voice and physique with a view to intimidating a member of the public using his bike. You stopped and went out of the car and face to face with the victim.”

Judge Jones told Smith that road rage wasn’t acceptable. He said: ”You are a bully. It’s history repeating itself. Your record of offending clearly shows you use violence when you feel it’s appropriate to do so.”

Defence solicitor Roger Thomas said lorry driver Smith was adamant he hadn’t been drinking that day.

His daughter had been in the car. Mr Thomas added: ”It’s a push in the heat of the moment against the background of both men shouting at each other.”
