AHEAD of the annual Remembrance Day service in November, St Helen Witton Church is appealing for volunteers to help them create some special poppies.

The church in Witton plan to create a display of more than 400 knitted and crocheted poppies to cover the Lych Gate.

Julian Williams, who is involved in the project, said: “We are appealing for members of the community to help us fill this tall order in time for the service in November. We as a church will greatly receive all help that is offered, no matter what experience you can bring to the table.”

The church offers a session for people to come in on Saturday mornings from 10am until 12pm where they will provide supplies to create the poppies, including a template for the iconic flower, in a sociable environment.

The poppies will go on display in the lead up to the memorial service on Sunday, November 11, as well as a bigger exhibition to remember the lives lost during the First and Second World War.
