Everyone loves a good café, a place to go where a full breakfast is served all day with tea on tap and the glorious smell of bacon and Head Chef in Shotton is no different.

Myself and my partner were out in Wales for the day when we came across this little hide away café on the street and let me tell you, it is a little gem. Based on Chester Road, Shotton, it’s on a main road and there’s not much parking but it’s definitely worth the walk.

The staff could not do enough to help you and greeted you at the door, with not only the gorgeous smell of bacon and coffee, but a charming smile and a heart-warming hello, well that was it for me, I just HAD to stay and order food.

Not going to lie, I felt a little pressured to order because the staff were coming over every two minutes to see that we were okay but let’s face it, I was always going to get the full English with a cup of tea and wow, it was amazing.

Despite the fact that we weren’t waiting very long, the food was extremely fresh, and the eggs were so fluffy I actually felt like I was eating a cloud. I ordered the Scrambled Egg Special, which came with scrambled eggs, two pieces of bacon, mushrooms, sausage, tomato or beans and bread or toast (obviously I had toast and beans) with a cup of tea.

I’m not one for eating sausages, I don’t like the taste or texture, but I thought I would give it a go and I’m surprised to say that I ate the whole thing without complaint, I was even surprised to see the bacon was perfect for me – crispy with barely any fat.

My partner essentially got the same, but he got two eggs and two sausages instead and he said the same, it was the nicest breakfast we have had in a while, and I'm a fussy eater.

It was an extremely clean place, as soon as people left, the staff were there cleaning the tables and although on the small side, the tables and chairs were situated perfectly with enough room to manoeuvre around. Upon leaving, children were also offered a lollipop (with permission from their parents) and I was a bit gutted that I didn’t get one, perhaps I don’t look as young as I thought I did.

We couldn’t get enough of the nice food that we even ordered a bacon and egg toastie and a milkshake each before we forced ourselves to leave before we were sick.

I must admit, I felt like royalty, one staff member who delivered our milkshakes (which were thick and creamy) made sure my straw was bent so I could drink from it and he even walked me to the toilet despite the fact that I could’ve found it on my own.

Don’t be fooled though, this quaint little café doesn’t just do breakfasts, you can get chicken nuggets, jacket potatoes, even a curry and so much more.

Other diners clearly enjoyed the experience as many tips were given and I noticed everyone left empty plates. I would definitely recommend going there, I will certainly be returning, who could pass up a full breakfast as nice as that? Plus, it is great value for money... it's a win win.

Head Chef is open seven days a week, Monday-Saturday 8am-8pm and Sunday 9am-3pm.
