A ‘STRONG policing operation’ will be in place for Chester FC’s derby with Tranmere Rovers this weekend.

The two sides meet at the Swansway Stadium on Saturday (April 7) for a fixture which will have implications at both ends of the National League table.

The match is ‘all-ticket’, meaning supporters will not be allowed entry on the day if they have not bought a ticket in advance.

Fans from promotion-chasing Tranmere have been allocated two stands and have sold out their 1,800 allocation, so the attendance will be close to a 50/50 split.

Games between the two local rivals are always fiercely contested and - as there is a history of crowd trouble in such fixtures - Cheshire Police say they will be making an extra effort to ensure supporters are safe.

Superintendent Debbie Hooper, who is in charge of the policing operation, said: “As with previous games, this weekend’s match is a ticket-only event. Anyone who arrives without a ticket will be turned away.

“I’d also like to remind fans heading to the game that they can expect to see a visible policing presence. We don’t want you to be alarmed or intimidated.

“This is to reassure the local community and ensure all supporters enjoy the match safely.

“We know that the majority of supporters have good intentions but a strong policing operation must be in place to ensure the game runs smoothly throughout the day and prevent any disorder before and after the whistle is blown, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a good game and feel safe.”

The Blues go into the game, which kicks off at 3pm, knowing their days in the National League look to be numbered.

Tickets can be purchased from the stadium ticket office until 4pm on Friday, April 6. Fans without a ticket will not be admitted on Saturday.

Anyone looking to report anti-social behaviour or disorder before or after the game can call Cheshire Police on 101 or speak to your nearest police officer.
