POTENTIAL troublemakers have been warned they are not welcome at this weekend’s cross-border derby.

Safe travel arrangements, also known as a police ‘bubble’, remain in place for Saturday’s match between Wrexham and Chester at The Racecourse.

Visiting fans will travel from Chester to Wrexham and back via coach, flanked by a police escort, in order to minimise the risk of trouble.

They cannot gain admission to the match unless they travel via coach.

It is the third successive season the controversial ‘bubble’ arrangements have been in place for meetings between the clubs.

Town centre inspector Simon Kneale says no chances are being taken by North Wales Police in protecting the safety of match-going fans, residents and members of the public.

He said: “It will be exactly the same as previous years, there will be a good police presence.

“There is an engagement team in place working from early that morning, visiting various parts of town, licensed premises, and focusing on areas around the ground. We want disruption to local residents to be kept to an absolute minimum.”

One potential headache for fans and the police is an issue regarding parking.

Fans can normally use Glyndwr University’s car park but this weekend the university is hosting an Urdd competition and the car park will be out of bounds to football fans.

Insp Kneale said: “We encourage those going to the football not to park in residential streets as this can cause problems for those trying to access their homes.”

He added: “We know people primarily come to the football with their families and to enjoy the game. We hope the small minority who come purely to cause disruption stay away.

“Both ourselves and Cheshire Police are fully aware of the banning orders issues in Wrexham and Chester, and they will be robustly enforced around the ground and the town. We want it to be a safe event and the tactics we’re using maximises the safety of those attending.

“We’ve also got a responsibility to safeguard the rights of those

in Wrexham going about their day-to-day business, carrying on with their normal lives.”

A Glyndwr University spokesman confirmed fans have been asked not to park at the university this weekend due to other events.
