TWO former members of the pop band The Tremeloes have appeared in court in Chester charged with indecent assault. Leonard ‘Chip’ Hawkes, 69, and Richard Westwood, 72, appeared before West Cheshire magistrates at Chester Magistrates Court and entered not guilty pleas to one count of indecent assault against a 15-year-old girl in 1968. They are accused of indecently assaulting the girl in a hotel in Chester. The alleged victim went to see another band in Chester, The Herd, before claiming she encountered Hawkes and Westwood. Hawkes, of Chertsey, Surrey and Westwood, of Crowthorne, Berkshire, spoke only to confirm their names and addresses and will next appear at Chester Crown Court on April 5, 2016, for a plea and case management hearing. They were granted unconditional bail. The Tremeloes formed in 1958 and first charted in the UK in July 1963 with a version of Twist and Shout. The band went on to have a string of hits, including a number one with Silence Is Golden. Guitarist and vocalist Westwood left in 2012 and bass player and vocalist Hawkes, left in 1988.
