CHESTER have snapped up defender Kieran Charnock as Steve Burr’s squad rebuilding programme continues.

Two days after luring Chester-born defender Danny Taylor from Colwyn Bay, Burr signed the experienced Charnock, who has played for Peterborough United, Torquay United, Morecambe, Fleetwood Town, Macclesfield and Stockport County.

And Blues boss Burr knows his new man well having managed the Preston-born 29-year-old at Northwich Victoria.

“I’m delighted to have signed Kieran and know what he is all about,” said Burr.

“He’s experienced in both league and non-league and at 29 and I have always kept a good eye on his progress. I look forward to working with him again.”

Preston-born Charnock came through the ranks at Wigan Athletic and spent a short spell on loan at Southport before being released and moving to Northwich.

A successful four-season stint – during which time he chalked up 11 international caps for England C – led to a Football League move to Peterborough United.

He struggled to make a big impact with Posh but impressed during a loan spell at Accrington Stanley during the 2008/09 season before he made the move to Torquay United.

Charnock later made moves to Morecambe and Fleetwood before joining Stockport County last summer.

He captained the Hatters last season in Conference North but was not offered a new deal at Edgeley Park.

Burr, who has also snapped up striker Sean McConville, is talking to a number of players as he builds a squad that will challenge for the Conference North title.

One player from  last year’s squad who is definitely returning is experienced midfielder Danny Harrison.

“The gaffer will have a list of players who he knows can fit the bill and I’m confident that he can help point Chester back into the Conference Premier league,” said Harrison,  who was delighted to see his good friend and former Tranmere Rovers team mate, Michael Kay, recently agree to extend his stay at Chester.

“Michael, like me, will be one of the most experienced players in the Chester squad and I know he will think he has something to prove next season,” added Harrison, who missed most of last season with a hip injury.

“He’s had one bite of the cherry at Chester and I know, after speaking to him, that he is determined to put things right after the disappointment of see the club relegated.

“He was out in the cold for a while last season, but he fought his way back into the team and then ended up being the first name on Steve Burr’s teamsheet and that’s why he has earned a new deal.

“I’ve also been pleased to see Sean McConville sign for Chester. I played against him when he was at Accrington and he’ll provide plenty of league pedigree to our team.”
