Chester have plunged into deeper crisis following the resignation of Simon Olorenshaw as chairman of City Fans United, the supporters group that owns the club.

Olorenshaw was joined last night by fellow board member Mark Howell in handing in his resignation, the duo having been co-opted back onto the board at the end of January following the news of Chester's dire financial situation, along with Jeff Banks and Calvin Hughes.

Olorenshaw, who previously had an 11-month spell at CFU chairman in 2016, was re-appointed as chairman in February but due to a major difference of opinion with other board members, he has opted to step down with immediate effect.

Howell, who was part of the board who helped reform the club back in 2010, has also opted to resign.

The decisions come in the wake of Saturday night's announcement by the CFU board that they would not be renewing first-team manager Marcus Bignot's contract when it expires at the end of the season.

In a brief statement put out shortly after 10pm on Monday, the City Fans United board said: "City Fans United can confirm tonight that both Mark Howell and Simon Olorenshaw have stood down from the board of directors."
