Marcus Bignot reacted angrily to the performance of his Chester players after their meek surrender in the 2-0 home defeat against Torquay United.

The Blues saved one of their worst performances of the season for this Good Friday clash, rolling over against fellow relegation-threatened opposition and finishing up with 10-men after Lucas Dawson mindlessly got himself sent off for two bookings in quick succession.

Chester are now 10 points adrift and now look certain to be relegated in National League North.

“I’m extremely disappointed by the manner in which we’ve lost that football match today,” Bignot said.

“We tried to stay away from how important it was so as not to put that pressure on them, they knew how important it was. Conceding so early from a confidence point of view meant that it visibly got to the players a bit.

“There’s some uncontrollable (factors) you can’t control as a manager and at times it was frustrating because they are good players when they want to be but this wasn’t good enough.”

When asked if certain players threw the towel in, Bignot replied: “It’s unforgivable. We’ll sort it out off-air who you’re talking about but I would go further than that.

“It’s people allowing that to happen on the pitch, that’s the bigger crime. That goes back to your character and the things that are sadly lacking.

“Up to the second goal, I was furious. For that to happen is unacceptable.

“I hate losing matches. I am the worst loser going. They’ve now got to get back on that pitch and show how much it hurts to lose football matches.

“You can’t win every game but when you lose, there’s a manner in which to do so and I am not happy with the manner of that defeat. I will defend the players but sometimes I won’t make excuses. They’ve let themselves down, they’ve let each other down and they’ve let us down.”
