KICK BOXING - Newbrook turns on the power to take title
DAVE NEWBROOK has powered his way to a world title.
The Chester kick-boxer experienced a tough Muay Thai contest at the Chester Racecourse Pavilion before stopping his Lithuanian opponent, Andrius Andriucha in the third round.
The 31-year-old WKA world light-welterweight champion produced a punishing body shot to beat his 17-year-old opponent, who is a former amateur gold medallist and rated third in the world.
Newbrook said: "I always felt in control during the fight and I was hitting him with shots that were finding the target.
"It was a tough bout against a good opponent, but I managed to move up through the gears as the bout progressed and I can honestly say that it was the best I have felt in any of my bouts to date.
"I've done a lot of my training in Liverpool with guys from the Ultimate Fighting Championship scene and I think that work has really paid off."
Newbrook, who is keen to step into the world of cage fighting early next year, is now taking a well deserved break before targeting his next bout in November.
He added: "I've got to defend my title twice in a year, so I'm planning to get back into the ring for my next fight in November.
"I'd like to defend the title at the Chester Racecourse Pavilion which proved a great venue and attracted a good crowd."
Other Chester-based fighters in action included John Henry McNamara, 17, from Newtown, who celebrated a victory after stopping his 18-year-old opponent in the fourth round.
McNamara successfully defended his under 18s European title against the experienced Lithuanian fighter.
Ashley Goodwin, 24, of Blacon, lost his closely-fought three-round contest on points but is hoping for a re-match.
And Ashley's older brother, Danny, 27, won his debut fight after stopping his opponent in the second round.
Also in action was Flintshire's Aled Lloyd who won a unanimous points decision, and Kieran McConell whose controversial contest against British Amateur Champion, Carlos Dait, was stopped after Kieran was
knocked down three times.
