CHESTER WEEKEND REVIEW - The opening Handicap Stakes was won in good style by the Mark Johnson trained Yamal, who quickened clear inside the final furlong under JP Guillambert to win decisively by six lengths from La Chicaluna in FRiday's opening race, writes ARTHUR SHONE.
Readers who took my advice that the Richard Hannon trained Doughnut was a good thing for the conditions stakes, never had an anxious moment as the Acclamation filly made every yard of the running under Pat Cosgrave to win very cosily by a length and a half from Madame Trop Vite.

Hamish McGonagall (my nap) made full use of the plum number one draw in the 9th Kathleen B Corbett Memorial Handicap to win going away by a length and a half under David Allan.

Secret Asset from the local Nescliffe yard of Mark Brisbourne did not come under starters orders, because he refused to enter the stalls, despite all the efforts of the handlers, the starter lost patience in the end

Half an hour late Brisbourne found himself in the winners enclosure after Transcentral held on gamely to repel the late challenge of Alphabeth in the Astbury Wren Nursery Handicap Stakes by a neck.

The old saying of back the outsider of four in a four runner race paid dividends to racegoers who subscribe to that system.

Brisbourne said: "This was a Brisbourne special. I only paid two grand for her as a yearling and she has been behind some good horses in her starts and she deseved this. I thought Taj(O'Shea) rode a great race on her . I might bring her back here for another nursery as she seems to like it here."

Brisbourne went on to complete a double at his local track with his course specialist Prelude (my selection), who defied top weight readily to win by a length and a quarter. Brisbourne also saddle the runner up Sir Sandicliffe

The Handicap stakes looked a competitive race beforehand and it turned out to be no different in the race itself.

Readers who took my advice that Andrew Balding's My Aunt Fanny was a progressive filly after her course and distance win at the last meeting, always looked like collecting after Liam Keniry brought the daughter of Nayef with a wet sail inside the final furlong to win going away by a length and a half from Bowder Stone.

The attendance last Friday evening was 15,175, which was excellent considering the weather forecast.

Saturday's meeting was a total sell out in County Stand , Tatts & Dee Stands, which was reflected in the attendance of 31,900, compared with 30,500 last year.

Chester racecourse's Richard Thomas said: "I am delighted with our attendance as we have been sold out months ago in the County Stand &Tatts, when you think that Newmarket only had 24,000 last week over three days for prize money of over a miilion, then we must be doing something right.

"I was pleased to get the award from the ROA for Chester racecourse.

"I thought we should have won the trophy earlier and you can quote me on that, we provide the best fascillities for owners and trainers anywhere in the country, the new pavillion has made a huge difference."

'Everything comes to those who wait' is definitely the motto of Warrington owner Dave Watson after his horse Keelung (my selection) won a very dramatic Totesport betXtra handicap.

At the end of two miles he looked beaten but found hidden reserves under Micky Fenton to deny Command Marshall by a nose bang on the line.

The winner was providing Tarporley trainer Richard Ford with his first ever winner on the flat at his local course. Fordy was represented at the course by his wife Carrie, who was elated afterwards.

She said: "He has had so many problems and to be fair to the owner Dave Watson he has been very patient with his horse, because he has had a broken pelvis and has had to be fired, he has deserved to win two races in a week. We will keep him now to the flat, as he was originally bought to go hurdling."

Racing came under starters orders with the City Plate over seven furlongs.

Course and distance winner Beckermet from the Roger Fisher yard looked all over the winner under Chris Catlin until Pat Cosgrave galvanized the tough Blythe Knight, who got up in the very final stride to win a thriller by a short head.

For the second day running Nescliffe trainer Mark Brisbourne had the first two horses past the judge.

The Handicap Stakes race went to Cheshire Prince under Eddie Ahern who beat stable companion New Star by two and a half lengths.

Brisbourne said afterwards that the first two were both course and distance winners and added that it was a pity they clashed but said that both sets of owners were very sporting. The winner is owned locally by Harry Clewlow from Nantwich and Derek Rutter from Broxton.

The feature race on the card was the City Wall Stakes over the minimum trip. There was a dramatic finish to the race with Green Manalishi holding on just by a nose from Borderlescott, Angus Newz was a further length back in third.

The runner up was desperately unlcky from the graveyard 9 draw, but they pay on the jamstick.

Readers who took my advice that Jim Boyle trained Red Baron Dancer was a good thing for the Totesport.com Maiden Auction Stakes never had an anxious moment.

Hereford trainer Richard Price won the Getting Out Stakes with Harare under Russell Kennemore, the combination went away in the home straight from the long time leader Glenridding.
