SAUGHALL CRICKET CLUB have staged the opening ceremony for their new ground at Golden Jubilee Park.
The long-running project has been delayed by electricity pylons and protected species on the site, but former Sheriff of Chester and Parish Councillor, Andrew Storrar, was at the crease to cut the ribbon to officially open the new playing facilities.

In his speech he thanked the Parish Council and 'Mr Saughall' Brian Huxley for all of their hard work in delivering the project and wished the club all the best for an exciting future.

After the formalities were complete the action got under way, with the current crop of players taking on 'Saughall Legends', in what proved to be a classic encounter.

The Legends team, comprising of a glittering array of players from Saughall's past, batted first and made 153 off their 30 overs in front of a crowd of excited spectators.

Mark Peters made 17 before he was dismissed by his son Ian, while Tony Summers (17), Alf Whitmore (10), Dave Andrews (16) and Allan Wilks (18 not out) proved that experience goes a long way.

But Saughall's current team reached their target with one wicket remaining.

Pete Tunnicliffe top-scored with 27 while Martin Huxley (19 not out) hit the winning runs to conclude an entertaining and nail-biting encounter.

Saughall's captain, Chris Andrews, said: "Today was a wonderful occasion and I'd like to thank everyone who made it possible. We're very much a community club and this was a real community effort. The playing facilities are fantastic and we can now look forward to a bright and exciting future."
