ATHLETICS: Carl shows off his all round talent

CARL VAN SCHIE has demonstrated his all-round ability with a victory at Sports City, Manchester.
The talented West Cheshire AC multi-eventer captured the North West Combined Events Open Competition men's decathlon title and finished first in the Cheshire Championship which was incorporated into the fixture.
He compiled a championship best points performance of 6,114 points from the two-day event.
Carl posted 11.40 seconds in the 100m, he long jumped 6.49m, hit 10.47m in the shot, cleared 1-79m in the high jump, and completed the first day with a time of 50.29 seconds in the 400m.
Day two began with a time of 16.86 seconds in the 110m hurdles, and continued with a throw of 34.62m in the discus, a clearance of 3-30m in the pole vault, a throw of 40.17m in the javelin, and a time of four minutes 46.41 seconds in the 1500m.
Amy Williams represented West Cheshire AC in the under 11 girls quadrathlon and finished in second position with 2,457 points.
Amy clocked 10.86 seconds in her 75m sprint, hit 14.26m in the javelin, long jumped 4.05m, and rounded the 800m in a time of 1:57:61.
ALEX HASWELL headed West Cheshire AC's charge at the Urenco Capenhurst 5km Road Race.
He secured second position in the under 20 age category and 11th place overall in a time of 17 minutes 46 seconds.
Alex was joined at the event by Gary Withers whose time of 18:44 earned him sixth spot in the over-50 age group and 26th place overall.
Kate Titlow and Kerry Riley achieved first and second positions in the under 20 ladies age group, finishing with times of 19:34 and 22:14 respectively for 33rd and 74th places overall.
Dave Hough secured seventh place in the over-55 age group after posting a time of 21:38 for 63rd place overall.
Peter Haswell rounded the course in 68th place and eighth spot in the over-50 age group after posting 21:59.
Brian Beattie completed the race in 84th position with a time of 23:10, and claimed second place in the over-60 age group.
And Charles Thackeray posted 25:40 for seventh place in the over-60 age group and 99th position overall.
FIXTURES this weekend include West Cheshire AC's participation on Sunday in the Northern Senior Track and Field League Division One Promotion Match, being held at Cudworth, near Barnsley, in Yorkshire. A coach to transport athletes and officials to the venue will depart from Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port, at 8.30am.
WEST CHESHIRE AC members wanting to compete in the Cheshire County Road Relay Championships, at Marbury Country Park, near Northwich, on Saturday, September 13, are reminded that entries close on Friday, September 5, and they should contact a club official if they are wanting to compete.
