ATHLETICS - Looking bleak for West Cheshire

WEST CHESHIRE AC's youngsters are staring relegation in the face, writes DENNIS WALL.
The Chester and Ellesmere Port-based club's depleted Young Athletes League squad, who won promotion last year, finished fourth in their penultimate Premier Division match staged in exceptionally windy conditions at Sheffield.

Alex Haswell secured
two victories in the under 17 men's 800m (2:02.6) and 1500m steeplechase (5:01.0), while Aamir Walwyn won the 200m (53.4), alongside Aidan Stoakley who won the B 200m (23.6), Tom Booth (second in the 400m hurdles in 62.1), and Robbie Dagnall (second in the long jump with 5.57m).

Michael Lyness won the discus (36.64m) and shot (10.34m), and the quartet of Stoakley, Walwyn, Dagnall, and Booth posted a winning 4x100m relay time of 46.5 seconds.

Alex Williams, Aaron Walwyn, David Donkin, Stephen Jones, Adam Howell, Tadgh Gregory, Michael Bailiff, Liam Renton, Sam Rimmer, and Tom Hughes represented the under 15 boys squad.

Oliver Wedgewood (200m in 28.4), Calum Graham (800m in 2:37.5), Yousef Khalifa (75m hurdles in 15.0 all won their under 13 boys events, supported by Alex Kirk, Oliver Ashworth, Wesley Talmage, and Leon Langmead.

Emily Clarke finished second with 10.22m in the under 17 ladies triple jump alongside Sarah Ratcliffe and debutants Anita McCloughlin and Laura Jackson.

Leah Ferrie won the under 15 girls B 200m in 26.2 and finished second in her B 100m with 13.0 seconds.

She was backed up by Alice McMahon, Jenna Sheehy, Karry Broster, Ashlea Allen, Danielle Erskine, Jenni Potter, and the quartet of Ferrie, McMahon, Potter, and Erskine combined to win the 4x100m relay in 51.6 seconds.

Laura Rigby celebrated an under 13 girls sprint double with times of 10.2m (75m), and 20.0 (150m), alongside Lucy Earl (75m, second in 10.8), and Kelly Baker who won the shot (7.52m) alongside Kate Dodd who finished second in the B event with 5.70m.

Olivia Montez-Brown, Lydia Perry, Abbie Ritchie, and Sally Pickering completed the under 13 contingent, and the quartet of Rigby, Baker, Earl, and Montez-Brown delivered a winning sprint relay time of 56.8 seconds.

MATCH RESULT: 1 Preston Harriers 458.5 points; 2 Blackpool Wyre and Fylde 388.5; 3 City of Sheffield 316; 4 West Cheshire 259.5.

Meanwhile, several West Cheshire AC members helped hoist Cheshire Schools' into second spot overall at the Inter-Counties Mason Track and Field Trophy Meeting staged at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium.

Aidan Stoakley, Alex Haswell, Tom Booth, Michael Lyness, Chris Goodwin, Sam Galley, Emily Clarke, Danielle Erskine, Alice McMahon, Jenni Potter, and Alice Jennings all represented their county.

n Fixtures this weekend include the English Schools' Regional Combined Events Championships, at Bebington Oval, on Saturday and Sunday.
And Cheshire Tigers travel to Wavertree, Liverpool, on Sunday, for their National Junior League Mersey Division third round match.

The Cheshire Schools' Minors (Year Seven) Championships take place on Tuesday, July 1, at Warrington, and the Chester Primary Schools' Track and Field Championships take place at Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port, on Wednesday, July 2.
